Daniel Johns and Paul Mac met in 1997 when the latter remixed the Silverchair single Freak. In 1998, Mac was asked back to add keyboards and other assorted noises to the Silverchair album Neon Ballroom.
When Silverchair took a break in 2000, Johns headed up to Mac's Blue Mountains home, where they recorded a song. A few months later, they recorded a few more in Newcastle when Mac helped Johns install a home studio. They later released these on the EP I Can't Believe it's Not Rock.
In 2001, Mac helped out with the Silverchair album Diorama. After Johns' battle with reactive arthritis, Mac joined the band onstage at the 2002 ARIAs for their return to live performances. Two years later, they decided to get together again. The result is The Dissociatives.
